Football does not believe in tears!

On the prediction platform Polymarket, one of the most unusual and widely discussed markets related to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has appeared. Users are invited to bet on whether Portugal’s national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo will cry during the tournament and whether this moment will be captured in the official television broadcast or match recordings.

The condition is defined quite strictly: for the event to count, the footballer’s tears must be recorded by cameras within the official tournament coverage. In other words, only on-field moments or situations within broadcast or match footage are considered. Emotions in tunnel areas, dressing rooms, or outside official broadcasts are not taken into account. The reason also does not matter — it could be a reaction to victory, defeat, or any other emotional moment. The market quickly attracted attention not so much because of its mechanics, but because of its symbolic choice of subject. Cristiano Ronaldo has long become a figure around whom emotional and media narratives of major tournaments are built. His career includes moments firmly embedded in football memory: tears after losing the Euro 2004 final to Greece, an emotional reaction to Portugal’s triumph at Euro 2016, and the dramatic exit from the 2022 World Cup after a defeat to Morocco.

That is why interest in such prediction markets appears almost natural. At 41, Ronaldo remains not only a key figure for Portugal but also one of the most recognizable athletes in the world, around whom a significant share of World Cup media attention is formed. As a result, audiences are interested not only in goals and team results but also in any emotional episodes involving the forward.

According to current market estimates, the probability of such an outcome is around 71%, with total betting volume already exceeding $89,000. For Polymarket, this is a typical example of how sports prediction markets are increasingly shifting away from pure results toward behavioral and media-driven scenarios. At the same time, the market highlights an important detail: it does not refer to the player’s private life or any off-camera emotions, but strictly to public moments captured within the official World Cup broadcast.
