The long-awaited film about Satoshi Nakamoto

The financial world is once again returning to a question that has remained unanswered for more than 15 years. On April 22, the documentary “Finding Satoshi” will be released, whose authors claim they are ready to present the most substantiated version of the identity of the creator of Bitcoin — a figure known under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.

The project is already being called an attempt to uncover “the greatest financial mystery of the 21st century.” And in some sense, this is not an exaggeration. The creation of Bitcoin and the subsequent disappearance of its author remain a unique phenomenon: a technology that changed global finance appeared without a face, without a center, and without a public creator.

The film “Finding Satoshi” is the result of a four-year investigation that combines journalistic work, digital forensics, and analysis of historical data. At the center of the story are investigative journalist and New York Times bestselling author William D. Cohan, as well as private investigator Tyler Maroney from Quest Research & Investigations. Together, they attempt to reconstruct the chain of events that led to the creation of Bitcoin and answer the main question: who stood behind this project.

The authors promise not just to retell known theories, but to present a conclusion based on facts: analysis of correspondence, early messages, technical decisions, and testimonies of participants from the early years of the crypto industry. The film features rare interviews with key market figures, including Michael Saylor, Fred Ehrsam, and Joseph Lubin.

The project is directed by Matthew Miele and Tucker Tooley. According to Tooley, the team understood from the very beginning that such an investigation could not be conducted superficially. That is why the work took several years and relied on real sources rather than speculation.

Interest in the topic is also fueled by the prediction market. On the platform Polymarket, the leading candidate for Satoshi is currently Len Sassaman — his probability is estimated at around 37%. This name has long circulated in the crypto community due to his work in cryptography and the philosophy of privacy.

Among other candidates returning to the spotlight are Adam Back, Hal Finney, and Nick Szabo. All of them are in one way or another connected to the early development of cryptography and the concepts that preceded Bitcoin.

At the same time, it is important to understand: the industry has already gone through multiple “revelations” that ultimately did not stand the test of time. Therefore, the main question is not so much whether the film will name a specific person, but how convincing the evidence base will be.

The reaction of industry representatives also deserves attention. The CEO of Coinbase, Brian Armstrong, noted that this is one of the most thoughtful takes on the topic he has seen and suggested that the authors may have reached the correct conclusion. For the market, this is an important signal: the film is perceived not as entertainment content, but as a serious analytical attempt.

However, even if the authors manage to convincingly substantiate their version, this does not mean the final closure of the question. The identity of Satoshi is not only a historical mystery, but also an important element of Bitcoin’s philosophy. The absence of a center and a creator figure has become part of the system’s trust.

And here a paradox arises. The closer the industry gets to an answer, the more often the question is heard: is it even necessary? On the one hand, revealing the identity could put an end to one of the most discussed stories of the digital era. On the other hand, it could change the perception of Bitcoin itself, which was originally built as a system beyond personality and control.

The film “Finding Satoshi” is released at a moment when the crypto market is once again in the spotlight, and interest in its origins is only increasing. And even if it does not provide a definitive answer, it will certainly remind us of the main thing: behind the code that changed the financial world were ideas, motivations, and philosophy that still shape the development of the entire industry.

Sometimes the most important questions remain unanswered not because they cannot be solved, but because the answer itself can change everything.
