Without a cat, life just isn’t the same!

An IT specialist got tired of fighting his own discipline and made a move that is both brilliant and slightly devious. Instead of yet another “smart” timer, he released a Chrome extension that works not through notifications, but through psychology. When you spend too much time on social media, a huge fluffy cat literally appears on your screen. It lies over the interface, blocks half of the screen, and behaves like a real pet — ignores your plans and refuses to leave early.

The extension is called Cat Gatekeeper, and its idea is disarmingly simple: if a person can’t stop themselves, they need to be gently but firmly stopped. Not with a button, not with a warning, but with something impossible to ignore. We close regular timers in a second. That trick doesn’t work here. You can’t swipe the cat away or minimize it with one click. If it shows up — it means it’s break time.

The creator openly admits the idea came from a classic situation familiar to every cat owner. You sit down to work, open your laptop — and right at that moment, your pet appears and decides the keyboard exists solely for them. Cat Gatekeeper recreates this exact scenario in a digital environment. The only difference is that now the cat shows up not randomly, but strictly on schedule.

The extension is free and ad-free, which in 2026 already sounds like something out of science fiction. The developer also addressed security concerns: page access is used solely to display the visual “blocking” layer, and no data is collected or shared with third parties. The project has been checked through services like VirusTotal and Extension Auditor to eliminate the main user fear — “is this cute creature spying on me?”.

It works extremely simply, and that’s exactly its strength. The user sets a time limit, for example the default 60 minutes. Then sets a break duration — usually around five minutes. After that, you can forget about it. Once the limit is reached, the cat appears. Not a small icon in the corner, but a full-fledged “screen overlord”. It lies over the content, blocks the usual flow of information, and starts a countdown. Until the timer ends, working or scrolling becomes, to put it mildly, inconvenient.

And this is where things get interesting. Unlike strict website blockers that cause irritation and the urge to uninstall them, Cat Gatekeeper plays on emotions. It’s impossible to see the cat as an enemy. It’s annoying just enough to stop you from doomscrolling, but still cute enough that you don’t want to delete it after five minutes. It’s a rare balance between control and charm.

In essence, it’s not just a productivity tool, but a small experiment in human behavior. People react poorly to restrictions, but respond well to gentle pressure — especially when it’s wrapped in something pleasant. The cat becomes not a limitation, but a reason to take a break. Not an order, but a hint that’s hard to ignore.

In an era of endless doomscrolling and information overload, solutions like this start to look less like a joke and more like a logical response to the problem. We’re used to technology fighting for our attention. Here, technology is trying to give it back — even if it takes a fluffy “screen invader” to do it.

In the end, Cat Gatekeeper is one of those rare cases where fighting procrastination turns from a dull obligation into something almost cozy. Yes, you’re being kicked out of social media. But it’s a cat doing it. And as everyone knows, arguing with a cat is pointless.
