Top Countries by Oil Reserves

? Our previous article about the discovery of large oil and gas reserves in Poland sparked considerable interest from readers. So we decided to dig deeper: where exactly are the world’s largest oil reserves? After all, oil is a true treasure for any nation.

When people think of oil, countries like Saudi Arabia or perhaps Russia come to mind. But the real leader on this list might surprise you.

Venezuela holds the largest oil reserves in the world.
According to international energy agencies, its underground wealth totals about 304 billion barrels, accounting for approximately 18% of the world’s known reserves.

Saudi Arabia comes in second with about 297.5 billion barrels,
Canada ranks third with approximately 168 billion barrels.

But here’s the paradox: despite its vast resources, Venezuela struggles to develop its oil industry effectively. The reason? Tough U.S. sanctions imposed in 2014, which severely limit exports, foreign investment, and access to modern extraction technology.

How are oil reserves calculated?

Oil reserves don’t refer to all the barrels buried underground. They represent the volume of crude oil that is technically and economically recoverable using current technologies and at present market prices.

? Why does it matter?

Oil remains a strategic resource, influencing national economies, global politics, and world markets. But leading the “oil race” doesn’t always guarantee prosperity-without technology, investment, and political stability, even the richest reserves may stay untapped.
