?Elon Musk has announced a new messenger called Chat, which will gradually replace the standard direct messages on the social network X. The official statement notes that the platform will be completely ad-free, which echoes similar promises once made by the founder of Telegram.

The service has received expanded functionality:

  • Voice and video calls;
  • File sharing;
  • Editing and deleting sent messages;
  • Disappearing chats;
  • Notifications about attempts to take a screenshot.

The developers paid particular attention to privacy. Chat supports end-to-end encryption and the ability to block screenshots at the user’s request. However, the company acknowledges that metadata, including information about the message recipient, remains accessible. In addition, there is still no protection from so-called Man-in-the-Middle attacks, in which an attacker can secretly intercept messages exchanged between two participants.

The update is already available in the X app on iOS and in the web version, and it will appear on Android in the near future. The developers also plan to introduce voice messages and release a standalone Chat application.

The first version of the messenger was paused by X’s administration in May without specifying the nature of the problems. Apparently, these issues have now been resolved. The platform’s support section states: “Unlike previous versions, it is now possible to encrypt group messages and media files”, while metadata, including information about the recipient, remains unencrypted.

The service also warns that the platform does not protect against Man-in-the-Middle attacks. “If someone — a malicious actor or X itself for legal reasons — gains access to an encrypted conversation, neither the sender nor the recipient will be aware of it,” the explanation says. At the moment, features are being developed that will help users verify the authenticity of encrypted conversations.

Chat represents a step toward transforming X from a social network into a full-fledged communication platform, combining various forms of interaction within a single application, although limitations in data protection and potential vulnerability to advanced attacks still remain.
