? ITER – The Most Ambitious Energy Experiment in History
In Cadarache, France, one of the most ambitious scientific projects of our time is under construction – the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). Its goal is to prove that controlled nuclear fusion can become a safe and virtually unlimited source of energy for humanity.
In simple terms, scientists are trying to “recreate the Sun in a jar” – to generate the same kind of fusion reaction that powers stars, but here on Earth. If successful, it could provide energy that is clean, produces no radioactive waste, and relies on abundant fuel.
The project is truly international: 35 countries are involved, including France, all EU nations, Japan, South Korea, the United States, India, China, and Russia. Such large-scale scientific cooperation is rare, especially in times of global division.
Once completed, the ITER reactor will weigh about 23,000 tons and reach a height of nearly 30 meters – about the size of a nine-story building.
The first test launch is scheduled for 2025, with full operation expected by 2035.
