? The most commonly counterfeited banknotes worldwide are:

  • The US $100 bill – the top target outside the US. It’s widely used in international transactions and large purchases, making it especially attractive to counterfeiters.
  • The US $20 bill – most frequently counterfeited within the US. It’s a smaller denomination often used in everyday retail transactions.
  • The €50 and €100 notes – popular targets in Europe. Despite being among the most secure currencies, counterfeiters still go after them.

Criminals don’t usually fake the biggest bills – they fake the ones that:

  • are often accepted without checking,
  • are used daily,
  • can be slipped into circulation at markets, gas stations, and shops.

? Tip: always check high-value bills against the light, by touch, and using their security features. One minute of attention can save you from financial loss.

We’ve written more on how to spot fakes [here and here].
