Our editorial team is quite fond of the robot theme — and we’re not hiding it. 🙂

Beijing has hosted the first-ever World Humanoid Robot Tournament, which will last three days and has already captured the attention of both scientists and the general public.

The competition brought together 280 teams from 16 countries — among the participants were universities, tech companies, and startups. On the arena, robots demonstrated not only strength and speed but also creativity: they played football, ran short-distance races, competed in table tennis, performed musical acts, and the boldest ones even entered the boxing ring.

Organizers emphasized that the competition is not just a show. It provides valuable data for the development of practical applications of robots in medicine, logistics, and service industries. Some challenges included sorting medicines, carrying materials, and performing cleaning tasks.

Teams arrived from the US, Germany, Brazil, and other countries. China had a particularly large representation: 192 teams came from universities, and 88 from private companies, including leaders like Unitree and Fourier Intelligence. Most participants used humanoids built by Chinese manufacturers, such as Booster Robotics.

China, investing billions of dollars in robotics amid technological rivalry with the US, clearly intends to show the world that it is becoming the main testing ground for artificial intelligence and automation.

Spectators joked that it was a good thing no one thought of organizing a “humans vs. robots” tournament — otherwise footballers and boxers might have felt a little uneasy standing next to their iron rivals.
