SpaceX Enters a New Market: AI Infrastructure for the Pentagon

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is in talks with the U.S. Department of Defense to provide computing capacity from its data centers for running and operating artificial intelligence models.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the potential deal could be worth billions of dollars and significantly expand SpaceX’s cooperation with the U.S. government.

What is known so far

The negotiations are still at an early stage, and no final agreement has been signed yet. Sources emphasize that the deal could still fall apart.

SpaceX aims not only to support its own xAI projects but also to become a full-scale provider of computing power for corporate and government customers.

The company plans to compete with AI infrastructure players such as CoreWeave, offering lower prices for renting GPU clusters.

Why this matters

This is not just another government contract.

The artificial intelligence market is gradually becoming an infrastructure market.

The winners will not only be those who create the best AI models but also those capable of providing massive amounts of computing power.

The U.S. Department of Defense is rapidly expanding AI infrastructure for:

  • military analytics;
  • intelligence operations;
  • satellite data processing;
  • autonomous systems;
  • combat scenario simulations.

This requires enormous data centers equipped with tens of thousands of advanced GPUs.

SpaceX is becoming an infrastructure company

Just a few months ago, many people viewed SpaceX purely as a space company.

However, over the past year, the company has aggressively expanded into AI Compute:

  • signed a long-term agreement with Google for cloud computing services;
  • provides access to approximately 110,000 Nvidia GPUs;
  • Anthropic rented the entire capacity of the Colossus 1 data center (300 MW);
  • Reflection AI signed a multi-year computing contract worth around $150 million per month.

In reality, SpaceX is becoming one of the largest providers of computing infrastructure for the artificial intelligence era.

Why government contracts are highly valued by investors

Historically, government contracts have been among the most attractive opportunities for major technology companies.

The reasons include:

  • long-term agreements lasting years;
  • multi-billion-dollar budgets;
  • high probability of contract extensions;
  • difficulty replacing suppliers after infrastructure integration;
  • stable cash flow.

Once a company becomes integrated into government infrastructure, replacing it becomes expensive, time-consuming, and technically difficult.

The Palantir comparison

A strong example is Palantir.

Its large-scale cooperation with the Pentagon and other government agencies became one of the key drivers of the company’s growth.

Government contracts provided stable revenue, increased investor confidence, and created a foundation for further business expansion.

That is why potential deeper cooperation between SpaceX and the U.S. Department of Defense could be far more significant than it initially appears.

What this means for Musk

If negotiations are successful, SpaceX will no longer be just a space company.

It will become several businesses at once:

  • a leader in space launches;
  • operator of the world’s largest satellite network, Starlink;
  • provider of AI infrastructure;
  • a strategic partner of the U.S. Department of Defense in computing and artificial intelligence.

These types of ecosystems are gaining the greatest strategic value in today’s economy.

Conclusion

For now, this remains only a negotiation, and no final agreement has been signed.

However, the fact that the Pentagon is considering SpaceX as a potential AI computing provider shows how quickly the company is expanding beyond the space industry.

If the contract is finalized, it could become one of SpaceX’s most important moves in the AI infrastructure market and further strengthen Elon Musk’s position in strategically important U.S. government projects.
