What to watch on the weekend if the theme of money and power is close to you

Holidays are a rare time when you can watch movies without haste, not as background noise, but for meaning. If instead of another fairy tale you want stories about influence, greed, elites, and the price of success, this playlist is just right for such evenings.

▪️ Trading Places, 1983
Two elderly financial magnates decide to amuse themselves – they make a bet and, for the sake of a pure experiment, swap the lives of a successful broker and a street con artist. One loses everything in a few days, the other suddenly gains access to money, connections, and power. The film is easy to watch as a comedy, but behind the humor lies a harsh idea: in the system, the starting position matters more than talent. Money here is not a reward for work, but an instrument of control. A great New Year’s movie with a cold aftertaste.

▪️ Wall Street, 1987
A classic of financial cinema and a must-watch for understanding the era of big money. A young ambitious trader falls under the influence of the charismatic corporate predator Gordon Gekko. Insider trading, market manipulation, broken families, and the famous phrase “greed is good.” The film is not so much about the stock market as it is about the temptation of fast money and the illusion of control over the system. An excellent choice for an evening when you want to feel the spirit of the old financial school.

▪️ Eyes Wide Shut, 1999
At first glance, it is a story about a marital crisis, but in essence, it is a film about class boundaries. A successful doctor from a wealthy class accidentally glimpses the world of closed elites, where money opens doors that ordinary people do not even know exist. Secret rituals, impunity, and a sense of absolute power. A very slow-paced movie that is best watched in silence, when fireworks are outside the window and on the screen there is a reminder that real control is always hidden.

▪️ Bad Santa, 2003
A dark comedy for those tired of glossy holiday cheer. The main character is a cynical, life-worn con man who robs shopping malls while posing as Santa Claus. Money here is not a goal, but a way to survive in a world where no one owes anyone anything. Crude humor, alcohol, greed, and unexpected humanity in the most inappropriate place. Works perfectly for a late evening and a second drink.

▪️ Billions, 2016-2023
A series that can be stretched over all the holidays. The confrontation between hedge funds and prosecutors, the market as a battlefield, and laws as instruments of pressure. Manipulations, insider information, psychological games, and the constant question: who actually controls the system. “Billions” shows well that the power of money is not about luxury, but about influence, access, and the ability to rewrite the rules for oneself.

This playlist is not about a fairy tale, but about reality. About how money shapes destinies, opens doors, and creates the illusion of freedom. Save it – it will be useful not only for the New Year, but for any long winter evenings.
