📈 The Wyckoff Method is one of the oldest yet still relevant approaches to market analysis. It was developed in the early 20th century by Richard Wyckoff – a trader, journalist, and one of the pioneers of technical analysis. Despite its age, the method remains effective today, especially in crypto and stock markets.

Core Idea

Core Idea Wyckoff Method

Wyckoff’s approach is based on understanding the behavior of “smart money” – large institutional players who gradually accumulate or distribute assets. He believed that markets move in cycles: accumulation – uptrend – distribution – downtrend.

The trader’s task is to identify which phase the asset is currently in.

The 4 Market Phases by Wyckoff

  1. Accumulation: Big players buy quietly while the crowd loses interest. Volume grows slowly. Price moves sideways.
  2. Markup: Price surges as retail traders jump in. Volume rises.
  3. Distribution: Institutions sell while the crowd buys at highs. Price enters another sideways range, showing signs of weakness.
  4. Markdown: Panic selling starts. The institutions are gone. Price seeks a new bottom to start the cycle again.

Key Principles

  • Law of Supply and Demand: If demand exceeds supply – price rises, and vice versa.
  • Law of Effort vs. Result: Volume (effort) should correspond to price movement (result).
  • Law of Cause and Effect: The length of accumulation defines the strength of the move.

Practical Application

  1. Watch volume, not just price.
  2. Identify the current phase.
  3. Look out for manipulation patterns (spring, upthrust).
  4. Confirm with other timeframes or indicators.

Example: What the Accumulation Phase Looks Like

During the accumulation phase, the chart often forms a sideways range with false breakdowns. Volume tends to decrease on declines and increase during upward moves. This may signal that large players are building positions.

Is It Suitable for Beginners?

Yes, but it requires patience and attention to volume. It’s not a magic bullet, but a logical and structured approach.

💡 Conclusion

The Wyckoff Method is a time-tested strategy that helps you think like a pro. Instead of chaos, you see cycles, logic, and intention. If you want to become the smart money — start with Wyckoff.

If you want to become “smart money” – start by studying this method. It contains 100 years of market wisdom.
