The White House shuts down D.O.G.E. early: the Musk–Trump project never actually worked

? The White House has officially disbanded the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E.) – a structure created by Donald Trump and initially headed by Elon Musk. The decision was made eight months before the agency’s mandate was set to expire, effectively putting an end to one of the most talked-about political-technological experiments of recent years.

An agency that promised to defeat bureaucracy

The idea of D.O.G.E. was presented as revolutionary: Musk was supposed to “cut bureaucracy,” optimize government spending, and deliver savings that the White House estimated at a whopping $2 trillion. The promise sounded impressive – almost like a Tesla Cybertruck marketing campaign, only in the world of public administration.

But in practice things went differently. According to Reuters, throughout the entire existence of the department not a single activity report was ever published. The “saved billions” that Trump’s political allies liked to mention were not backed by any documents.

Internal chaos and loss of structure

Media reports indicate that the project gradually lost structure and oversight within the administration. The team responsible for implementing the initiative shrank, tasks became blurred, and the department stopped resembling a functioning government body.

Against this backdrop, the White House decided to shut D.O.G.E. down early. Former staff members have already been reassigned to other positions – the agency has officially ceased to exist.

Musk had distanced himself long ago

Elon Musk left his White House post even earlier. He did not publicly comment on the department’s work, its closure, or his earlier promises regarding cost optimization. It seems the topic of government efficiency turned out far less exciting than launching rockets or building gigafactories.

Another telling detail: Musk also stopped talking about attempts to create a “third political force” in the U.S. immediately after reconciling with Trump. Apparently, political turbulence gave way to the billionaire’s more familiar ambitions.

? How it ended

Formally, D.O.G.E. was supposed to operate for another eight months, but it was shut down essentially “quietly.” No reports, no results, no loud statements.

The conclusion can be summed up briefly:
The project promised to optimize the country’s governance, but itself became an example of how a government initiative can lose direction. Symbolic? More than enough.
