The email that launched the crypto era

🚀 Exactly 17 years ago, Satoshi Nakamoto sent one of his landmark messages in an email newsletter:

“The Bitcoin system turns out to be socially useful and valuable, so node operators will feel that they are contributing positively to the world through their efforts (similar to various projects where people voluntarily provide their computing resources for good causes). In this case, it seems to me that simple altruism may be enough for the network to function properly. This is very attractive from a libertarian perspective if we can explain it correctly. Although I am better friends with code than with words.”

Why this matters:

In this email, Satoshi publicly outlined the social and philosophical foundation of Bitcoin for the first time. He emphasizes that the network can operate not only through financial incentives but also through conscious participation by people who want to contribute to society. Unlike traditional money, controlled by central banks and government institutions, Bitcoin offers a model of decentralized trust: each network participant (node) contributes by verifying transactions and maintaining the integrity of the blockchain.

Satoshi highlights altruism and voluntary participation, comparing node operations to charitable projects where people share their computing resources for the common good. He notes that for the proper functioning of the system, this altruism may be sufficient — financial incentive is not the only driver.

It is also important to underline the libertarian philosophy at the core of Bitcoin. Satoshi values creating a network independent of state institutions and corporate control, where participants act freely and voluntarily, guided not only by personal gain but also by the idea of the common good.

The irony is that the author admits: “I am better friends with code than with words.” This humble statement shows that Satoshi Nakamoto is, above all, an engineer and programmer who created a technology capable of changing the financial world, leaving philosophical explanations to users and society.

💡 Conclusion:

This email serves as a reminder that Bitcoin was originally designed not just as a financial instrument, but as a socio-technical project that brings together people, ideas, and technology. Altruism, trust, and decentralization have become the cornerstones of the network, which still define its uniqueness and value in the global digital world.
