From Supercomputers to the Quantum Revolution: Google Leads the Way

? Google has taken a major step in quantum computing by unveiling a new algorithm called Quantum Echoes, which developers claim is the world’s first verified foundation for practical quantum computing applications capable of outperforming even the most powerful classical supercomputers.

The New Algorithm and Its Capabilities

Quantum Echoes runs on Google’s Willow quantum chip — a device designed to overcome one of the main challenges of quantum systems: qubit instability. During testing, Quantum Echoes demonstrated a performance 13,000 times faster than the best classical algorithms on modern supercomputers, showing the enormous potential of quantum technology for solving problems once considered practically impossible.

According to Google, Quantum Echoes could become a key technology for studying molecular structures, opening new paths for the creation of drugs and materials with unique properties. The algorithm can accelerate the discovery of new types of materials and chemical compounds, which could be highly significant for pharmaceuticals, materials science, and nanotechnology.

Google researcher Tom O’Brien emphasized: “If I can’t prove that the data is correct, how can I do anything with it?”

This phrase reflects one of the core principles of practical quantum computing — verifiability of results. A key feature of Quantum Echoes is that its computations can be physically verified, which is critical for use in science and industry.

Experimental Results and Historical Significance

According to Nature, the Quantum Echoes experiment achieved 99.9% accuracy when operating with 105 qubits. Moreover, the algorithm solved a problem physicists had worked on for 150 years — in just two hours. This milestone marks the first confirmed demonstration of quantum supremacy — when a quantum machine not only computes faster than classical systems but does so with a verifiable outcome.

Google notes that this breakthrough could also drive advances in artificial intelligence (AI). Quantum Echoes enables the creation of new and unique datasets, especially in fields where data is scarce — biomedicine, pharmacology, and complex biological systems. As Google stated: “Quantum Echoes opens the door to practical quantum systems that can generate verifiable, unique data to train future AI models.”

The development is already being compared to Google’s 2024 breakthrough with the Willow chip, which for the first time successfully overcame qubit instability — a long-standing issue in quantum computing.

Competition and the Quantum Race

Google isn’t alone in this field. Companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM are also heavily investing in quantum technologies. IBM recently unveiled a roadmap for building a fully fault-tolerant quantum computer called Quantum Starling, set for launch in 2029.

Experts warn that by that time, the quantum threat to cryptocurrencies — including Bitcoin and other digital assets — could become real. In May 2025, BlackRock issued a warning about potential risks to crypto assets due to quantum advancements.

DeFi developer Andre Cronje put it bluntly: “I’m more afraid of our new quantum overlords than of AI overlords.”

However, quantum computing has already proven useful in finance. In September 2025, HSBC and IBM used quantum computing for bond trading, improving forecast accuracy by 34%, demonstrating the real economic value of the technology.

⚛️ Investments and the Future

Google continues to expand its presence in quantum and AI technologies. Just last week, the company announced $24 billion in investments to develop AI infrastructure in the U.S. and India, highlighting the strategic importance of these technologies for its future.

Thus, Quantum Echoes not only showcases Google’s breakthrough in quantum computing but also opens the way to new possibilities in science, technology, medicine, and finance — becoming a potential catalyst for the next technological revolution.
