🔌 Zuckerberg is building data centers the size of Manhattan: Meta will become the first company with a “supercluster” exceeding 1 gigawatt of power

While others are just trying to run AI in a browser, Mark Zuckerberg is going all-in. Meta has announced the construction of the world’s first “gigacluster” – a massive data center with electrical capacity of over 1 gigawatt.

The goal is simple – “to provide more computing power per researcher than any other company,” Zuckerberg emphasized.

In his view, if you want to lead the AI race, it’s not enough to build models – you need to give scientists and engineers the resources to launch their ideas without waiting in line for GPUs like for coffee.

For comparison: typical data centers today run on 10 to 300 megawatts. This one – a full gigawatt. That’s like lighting up all of Manhattan, not with ads, but with servers.

Why does Meta need so much energy?

The answer is simple – artificial intelligence. Meta is actively training its models, including Llama 3, and is preparing to launch an even more powerful Llama 4. That requires tens of thousands of GPUs – and sadly, they don’t run on batteries.

What do we know about the gigacluster?

  • Power: over 1 gigawatt
  • Built for AI services and model training
  • Designed for long-term use (decades)
  • Powered by renewable energy – Zuckerberg doesn’t want to anger environmentalists (or investor

📌 Why does it matter?

We’re entering an era where AI giants will compete not only in megabytes, but also in megawatts. Whoever has the more powerful cluster – sets the pace.

Meta is the first, but certainly not the last. Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are already hot on its heels. This is not just a trend – it’s a new digital industrial revolution.
