🐾 Seed Phrases Named Main Target of SparkKitty Trojan
It seems a new furry nightmare has appeared in the crypto world. The malicious program SparkKitty, researchers found, hunts specifically for crypto wallet seed phrases – which, as you know, are the keys to the vault.
What is SparkKitty?
Despite its cute name, SparkKitty is a next-gen malware spreading mainly through fake browser extensions, fake updates, pirated software, and malicious Discord bots.
Its goal – quietly steal the user’s seed phrase and then gain full access to their crypto wallet.
Why seed phrases?
Because a seed phrase is your entire crypto life. Whoever has this phrase has everything: bitcoins, ethers, an NFT hat from 2021, and even the coin you forgot to buy at the bottom.
Unlike a simple keylogger, SparkKitty targets a specific type of data. It scans the clipboard, intercepts input, and even scans files for phrases like mnemonic, seed, wallet, passphrase.
How does it do this?
- Uses low-level hooks and process injections
- Can run in the background without raising suspicion
- Some versions can send the seed phrase directly to attackers’ servers, even if entered offline
How to protect yourself?
- Never store seed phrases in text files on your computer
- Use hardware wallets
- Don’t install “anything”- especially extensions, software from torrents, and “Web3-enabled browsers”
- Check website URLs and always download wallets only from official sources
🛡️ And most importantly: never enter your seed phrase on websites, even if they look real. SparkKitty has nine lives, but your wallet sadly has only one.
