Meta Caught in the Middle of a Scandal Again

šŸ”„ American tech giant Meta is once again at the center of a major scandal. According to a new lawsuit, Mark Zuckerberg’s company spent years downloading and distributing copyright-protected adult content via torrent networks, allegedly to train its AI systems. Yep, you heard that right — even artificial intelligence needs to be ā€œeducated with examples,ā€ spicy ones included.

The lawsuit was filed by Strike 3 Holdings and Counterlife Media, well-known players in the adult film industry. They accuse Meta of “willful and knowing” copyright infringement – involving no less than 2,396 films since 2018.

According to the complaint, Meta not only downloaded adult videos without permission but also shared them through peer-to-peer networks, supposedly to ā€œaccelerate the transfer of large volumes of other training data.ā€ The logic is debatable, but perhaps their AI was truly ā€œlearningā€ faster…

Torrent networks aren’t just a favorite method for downloading movies and games – they’re peer-to-peer data sharing platforms. Meta, the plaintiffs say, took full advantage of them – and not out of generosity.

Strike 3, which receives over 25 million monthly visitors, is demanding compensation that could reach $359 million, along with a court order to stop further use of its content.

šŸ“Œ While Meta remains silent, the industry is buzzing not only about the potential consequences of the case – but also about the moral question: what exactly are these neural networks learning, and who are they learning it for?
