Silent Attack: How Hackers Are “Mining” Right Under Your Nose

👾 Hackers infected over 3,500 websites with a stealth Monero miner

According to analysts, cybercriminals deployed a malicious script to mine Monero on more than 3,500 websites. The malware operates covertly – by limiting CPU usage and disguising traffic via WebSocket connections, it avoids the typical signs of traditional cryptojacking.

The attack’s uniqueness lies in how the code was injected: through vulnerabilities in popular plugins, loaded directly from external sources, and remaining undetected by site owners and antivirus software.

Why it matters:

  • This is a large-scale attack affecting thousands of websites globally.
  • Infection can reduce user device performance and harm site reputations.
  • Monero (XMR), known for its anonymity, is often used in such schemes due to its difficulty to trace.

💡 What to do:

  • Website owners should update all CMS components and check page source code.
  • Users are advised to use mining blockers and security browser extensions.

Online threats are evolving: even “silence” in your system’s behavior might mean your processor is working for someone else.
