🕵️♂️ AI impostor posed as US Secretary of State and contacted foreign ministers
Fake Marco Rubio was sending messages on behalf of the US State Department.
An unknown actor used artificial intelligence to clone the voice and appearance of Senator Marco Rubio, Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee – in an attempt to impersonate a State Department official and reach out to high-level foreign leaders.
The attacker created a fake Signal account using the address marco.rubio@state.gov, sending messages to at least five recipients, including foreign ministers, a state governor, and a member of Congress.
What we know:
Rubio’s voice and likeness were AI-generated, likely from publicly available video and audio.
- The US State Department confirmed the incident and is strengthening cybersecurity measures.
