Apple has officially confirmed a strategic partnership with Google that could become one of the most significant alliances in the artificial intelligence industry in recent years. The agreement is a multi-year deal under which Google’s Gemini models will serve as the technological foundation for new AI features across Apple’s ecosystem, including a major upgrade to the Siri voice assistant scheduled for this year.

In effect, Apple has publicly acknowledged what the market has long suspected: at this stage, the company’s own generative AI developments are not sufficient to compete on equal footing with industry leaders. In an official statement obtained by CNBC, Apple explicitly stated that after careful evaluation of multiple options, Google’s technology was deemed “the most capable” foundation for Apple Foundation Models – the core models that will power the company’s future intelligent features.

This marks an important shift in Apple’s philosophy. Historically, the company has sought to tightly control key technologies within its ecosystem, often favoring in-house solutions even when they objectively lagged behind competitors. With AI, Apple has chosen a different path: rather than catching up at any cost, it is leveraging a mature and scalable platform. Gemini is currently regarded as one of the most advanced AI models in the world, evolving rapidly across both consumer and enterprise use cases.

The impact of the deal on Siri is of particular interest. For many years, Apple’s voice assistant was widely seen as one of the ecosystem’s weakest components, trailing competitors in contextual understanding, conversational flexibility, and the ability to handle complex requests. Integration with Gemini is expected to fundamentally change that perception. According to market expectations, the updated Siri will feature more natural speech, deeper contextual awareness, the ability to handle long chains of queries, and tighter integration with apps and services across iOS, macOS, and iPadOS.

At the same time, Apple emphasizes that this is not a simple “plug-in” of third-party AI. Gemini and Google’s cloud infrastructure will form the foundation for future Apple Foundation Models. In other words, Apple will retain control over the user experience, interfaces, and functional logic, while using Google’s technology as the underlying engine. This approach allows Apple to preserve its core competitive advantage – control over the ecosystem – while significantly accelerating AI adoption to a level long expected by users and investors.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Apple declined to comment, and Google limited its response to the joint statement. This is typical for agreements of this scale, but the fact that it is a multi-year contract indicates a high level of trust between the two companies. As early as August, Bloomberg reported that Apple was in early talks with Google about a custom version of Gemini for a new iteration of Siri. Those reports have now been officially confirmed.

For Google, the deal represents a strategic victory. It positions Gemini as a de facto AI standard even for companies that have traditionally avoided deep reliance on Google’s ecosystem. In effect, Apple has publicly acknowledged Google’s technological leadership in AI, strengthening Google’s position in competition with OpenAI, Microsoft, and other major players.

For the broader market, the agreement sends a strong signal. It shows that the AI race is entering a phase of consolidation, where even the largest technology giants are forced to cooperate rather than build everything independently. Users, ultimately, stand to benefit from smarter, more useful, and more “alive” devices, where AI moves beyond marketing jargon and becomes a practical tool for everyday use.

In this sense, the Apple-Google partnership is more than just another corporate contract. It is a recognition of a new technological reality, where AI quality has become a critical factor of competitiveness, and the ideology of “everything in-house” is giving way to pragmatism and speed of innovation.
