🔥 ChatGPT helped solve a deadly fire case in Los Angeles: how AI exposed the culprit
In Los Angeles, nine months after a massive fire, 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht was arrested on suspicion of setting fire to the Pacific Palisades residential complex. The key evidence in the case was an image of a burning city generated by ChatGPT and found on the defendant’s digital devices, NBC News reports.

Course of the investigation and arrest
Rinderknecht was arrested in Florida, where he moved shortly after the fire. He has been charged with destruction of property by arson. Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essaily noted that the arrest should be a step toward justice for all victims. California Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized the importance of the arrest for thousands of Californians whose lives were destroyed. Authorities do not rule out that charges may be upgraded to murder. The defendant denies any guilt.
Digital evidence and the link to ChatGPT
Investigators found that Rinderknecht was actively interested in fires. His phone contained records showing he had asked ChatGPT questions such as: “Would you be guilty if your cigarettes started a fire?” In July 2024, he also generated an “anti-utopia”-style image through the neural network, based on a detailed description: a burning forest, a crowd fleeing the flames, and wealthy people watching the catastrophe from behind gates with a dollar sign.

Investigators noted that the generated images reflected Rinderknecht’s psychological state and motivation. He asked ChatGPT to create an image of a divided city: on one side, a poor district engulfed in flames; on the other, the rich watching behind a fence with large gates and a dollar symbol.
Background and chronology of the tragedy
According to investigators, Rinderknecht committed the arson on January 1, 2025, after finishing a shift as an Uber driver. One passenger that day reported that the driver appeared anxious and angry. After dropping off the passenger, Rinderknecht started the fire, called 911, and fled in his car. He also filmed a short video as firefighters passed by and recorded their work on his phone.
The fire, initially contained, continued smoldering in plant roots and flared up again during storm winds, leading to catastrophic consequences.
Scale of destruction
The Pacific Palisades fire, which began on January 7, 2025, became the most destructive in Los Angeles history: 12 people died, more than 6,000 homes were destroyed, and total damages are estimated at $150 billion. Among the victims were homes of celebrities including Mel Gibson, Paris Hilton, and Jeff Bridges. The fire raged for over three weeks, devastating the Topanga and Malibu areas as well.

Hearings in Rinderknecht’s case are scheduled for the coming weeks. Evidence for his arrest included his ChatGPT queries indicating a growing obsession with fire, and his phone’s geolocation data placing him within 10 meters of the fire’s origin at the time it started.
🕵️♂️ AI-generated images became key evidence, helping law enforcement link the arson to a specific individual. California authorities said that the arrest of 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht was an important step in investigating one of the most destructive fires in the state’s history.
